Barkly Regional Council is the world's fourth largest Local Government Area (LGA) and the second biggest in Australia, covering 323,000km squared with a population of over 8000 people. The region stretches from Barrow Creek in the south all the way up to Newcastle Waters, and East to the Queensland border.

In the centre of the Northern Territory and the Barkly Region is Tennant Creek, the largest town in the region and where our Council's operations are based. There are a total of six towns in the Barkly, all with surrounding urban communities, and eight minor communities across the region.

We now have an opportunity for a Director of Corporate Services to join our Tennant Creek-based team full-time.

The Opportunity

When you join Barkly Regional Council, you are joining a team that is community-focused and works to improve standards of living and access to services for all people across the Barkly Region. 

You will provide leadership and guidance to the Council's corporate services, working alongside the Mayor and Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to deliver the council’s plans.

As this is a Council role, you will be on a four-year contract, and use your time to support the Council’s operations through effective leadership of our HR, IT, administration, and customer service teams across the Barkly Region. 

This is a unique Council that services a large geographical area, and focuses on community development and continuous improvement for the region. We work with strong collaboration, not just within the Council, but between our Council and many community groups, Aboriginal Corporations, NFPs, as well as State and Federal governments.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the full end-to-end recruitment function of Barkly Regional Council;
  • Facilities and asset management including contract and rental negotiations and management;
  • Ensuring sufficient IT infrastructure for all areas of the Council;
  • Managing the payroll function as part of HR; and 
  • Lead and develop 14 direct staff.

As our head office is in Tennant Creek, this is where you will be based, and you will travel to visit our six other key urban regions within the Barkly.

Remuneration and Benefits

You will receive a generous base salary of $140,000 each year for the term of your contract plus 12% super and great benefits.

About You

You will be working with an enthusiastic and passionate group of executive leaders and elected officials, as well as managing a team of successful corporate services staff. You will have the ability to collaborate with and get the best out of a range of different personalities. 

You will need to have a strong understanding of corporate services and their importance to the effective operations of our Council. 

You will have:

  • Experience in corporate services leadership
  • Relevant qualification in Business or a related field
  • Strong understanding of contract negotiation and management
  • Understanding of IT infrastructure and what IT is needed to be successful
  • Experience in HR management including payroll
  • Collaborative leadership style 
  • High-level communication and negotiation skills with public and private sector stakeholders 
  • Experience managing and leading diverse teams across different locations

Our Council is unique in the way that we collaborate with other organisations, and you will have experience working with NFPs and Aboriginal Community Controlled Corporations. Working holistically with a community will be something you believe passionately in.

Most importantly, you will be passionate about developing communities and improving access to services. AICD membership is also preferred.
